HR
Textron's research & development teams have been pioneering photonic control
technology since the early 1990's. During this time we developed and tested smart
photonic actuators for NASA. HR Textron's first
smart actuators incorporated fiber optic technology as the primary communication
interface, which increased bandwidth as well as immunity to electromagnetic inference.
The use of fiber optics also simplifies system integration and significantly reduces
wire count and overall weight. From the initial technology,
HR Textron has evolved a series of refinements. Today's Fly-By-Light (FBL) systems
encompass diverse disciplines and technologies, which facilitate built-in fault
detection and isolation. In the future, Fly-By-Light technology will expedite
the development of aerospace vehicles that are safer, lighter, and higher performance
with lower life-cycle costs. For further information on Photonic Controls,
